Saddam hanged for war crimes in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -

Saddam Hussein struggled briefly after American military guards handed him over to Iraqi executioners. But as his final moments approached, he grew calm.

He clutched a Quran as he was led to the gallows, and in one final moment of defiance, refused to have a hood pulled over his head before facing the same fate he was accused of inflicting on countless thousands during a quarter-century of ruthless power.

A man whose testimony helped lead to Saddam's conviction and execution before sunrise said he was shown the body because "everybody wanted to make sure that he was really executed."
"Now, he is in the garbage of history," said Jawad Abdul-Aziz, who lost his father, three brothers and 22 cousins in the reprisal killings that followed a botched 1982 assassination attempt against Saddam in the Shiite town of Dujail.

Iraqi television showed what it said was Saddam's body, his head uncovered and the neck twisted at a sharp angle.

The footage showed the man identified as Saddam lying on a stretcher, covered in a white shroud. His neck and part of the shroud have what appear to be bloodstains. His eyes are closed.
In Baghdad's Shiite enclave of Sadr City, hundreds of people danced in the streets while others fired guns in the air to celebrate. The government did not impose a round-the-clock curfew as it did last month when Saddam was convicted to thwart any surge in retaliatory violence.
It was a grim end for the 69-year-old leader who had vexed three U.S. presidents. Despite his ouster, Washington, its allies and the new Iraqi leaders remain mired in a fight to quell a stubborn insurgency by Saddam loyalists and a vicious sectarian conflict.
The execution took place during the year's deadliest month for U.S. troops, with the toll reaching 108.

He said that the execution marks the "end of a difficult year for the Iraqi people and for our troops" and cautioned that Saddam's death will not halt the violence in Iraq.
Within hours of his death, at least 46 people died and more than 80 were wounded in two bombings — 31 in one attack south of the capital and 15 in a Baghdad blast.
Ali Hamza, a 30-year-old university professor, said he went outside to shoot his gun into the air after he learned of Saddam's death.

"Now all the victims' families will be happy because Saddam got his just sentence," said Hamza, who lives in Diwaniyah, a Shiite town 80 miles south of Baghdad.
But people in the Sunni-dominated city of Tikrit, once a power base of Saddam, lamented his death.

"The president, the leader Saddam Hussein is a martyr and God will put him along with other martyrs. Do not be sad nor complain because he has died the death of a holy warrior," said Sheik Yahya al-Attawi, a cleric at the Saddam Big Mosque.

Police blocked the entrances to Tikrit and said nobody was allowed to leave or enter the city for four days. Despite the security precaution, gunmen took to the streets of Tikrit, carrying pictures of Saddam, shooting into the air, and calling for vengeance.
Security forces also set up roadblocks at the entrance to another Sunni stronghold, Samarra, and a curfew was imposed after about 500 people took to the streets protesting the execution of Saddam.

A couple hundred people also protested the execution just outside the Anbar capital of Ramadi, and more than 2,000 people demonstrated in Adwar, the village south of Tikrit where Saddam was captured by U.S. troops hiding in an underground bunker.
In a statement, Saddam's lawyers said that in the aftermath of his death, "the world will know that Saddam Hussein lived honestly, died honestly, and maintained his principles."
"He did not lie when he declared his trial null," they said.
Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, were not hanged along with their former leader as originally planned. Officials wanted to reserve the occasion for Saddam alone.

"We wanted him to be executed on a special day," National Security adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie told state-run al-Iraqiya television.

Sami al-Askari, the political adviser of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, told The Associated Press that Saddam initially resisted when he was taken by Iraqi guards but was composed in his final moments.

He said Saddam was clad in a black suit, hat and shoes, rather than prison garb. His hat was removed and his hands tied shortly before the noose was slipped around his neck.
Saddam repeated a prayer after a Sunni Muslim cleric who was present.

"Saddam later was taken to the gallows and refused to have his head covered with a hood," al-Askari said. "Before the rope was put around his neck, Saddam shouted: 'God is great. The nation will be victorious and Palestine is Arab.'"

Iraqi state television showed footage of guards in ski masks placing a noose around Saddam's neck. Saddam appeared calm as he stood on the metal framework of the gallows. The footage cuts off just before the execution.

Saddam was executed at a former military intelligence headquarters in Baghdad's Shiite neighborhood of Kazimiyah, al-Askari said. During his regime, Saddam had numerous dissidents executed in the facility, located in a neighborhood that is home to the Iraqi capital's most important Shiite shrine — the Imam Kazim shrine.

Al-Askari said the government had not decided what to do with Saddam's body.
The Iraqi prime minister's office released a statement that said Saddam's execution was a "strong lesson" to ruthless leaders who commit crimes against their own people.
"We strongly reject considering Saddam as a representative of any sect in Iraq because the tyrant only represented his evil soul," the statement said. "The door is still open for those whose hands are not tainted with the blood of innocent people to take part in the political process and work on rebuilding Iraq."

The execution came 56 days after a court convicted Saddam and sentenced him to death for his role in the killings of 148 Shiite Muslims from Dujail. Iraq's highest court rejected Saddam's appeal Monday and ordered him executed within 30 days.

A U.S. judge on Friday refused to stop Saddam's execution, rejecting a last-minute court challenge.

U.S. troops cheered as news of Saddam's execution appeared on television at the mess hall at Forward Operating Base Loyalty in eastern Baghdad. But some soldiers expressed doubt that Saddam's death would be a significant turning point for Iraq.

"First it was weapons of mass destruction. Then when there were none, it was that we had to find Saddam. We did that, but then it was that we had to put him on trial," said Spc. Thomas Sheck, 25, who is on his second tour in Iraq. "So now, what will be the next story they tell us to keep us over here?"

At his death, he was in the midst of a second trial, charged with genocide and other crimes for a 1987-88 military crackdown that killed an estimated 180,000 Kurds in northern Iraq. Experts said the trial of his co-defendants was likely to continue despite his execution.

Many people in Iraq's Shiite majority were eager to see the execution of a man whose Sunni Arab-dominated regime oppressed them and Kurds. Before the hanging, a mosque preacher in the Shiite holy city of Najaf on Friday called Saddam's execution "God's gift to Iraqis."

In a farewell message to Iraqis posted Wednesday on the Internet, Saddam said he was giving his life for his country as part of the struggle against the U.S. "Here, I offer my soul to God as a sacrifice, and if he wants, he will send it to heaven with the martyrs," he said.

One of Saddam's lawyers, Issam Ghazzawi, said the letter was written by Saddam on Nov. 5, the day he was convicted by an Iraqi tribunal in the Dujail killings.

Najeeb al-Nauimi, a member of Saddam's legal team, said U.S. authorities maintained physical custody of Saddam until the execution to prevent him being humiliated publicly or his corpse being mutilated, as has happened to previous Iraqi leaders deposed by force. He said they didn't want anything to happen to further inflame Sunni Arabs.

"This is the end of an era in Iraq," al-Nauimi said from Doha, Qatar. "The Baath regime ruled for 35 years. Saddam was vice president or president of Iraq during those years. For Iraqis, he will be very well remembered. Like a martyr, he died for the sake of his country."

Iraq's death penalty was suspended by the U.S. military after it toppled Saddam in 2003, but the new Iraqi government reinstated it two years later, saying executions would deter criminals.
Saddam's own regime used executions and extrajudicial killings as a tool of political repression, both to eliminate real or suspected political opponents and to maintain a reign of terror.
In the months after he seized power on July 16, 1979, he had hundreds of members of his own party and army officers slain. In 1996, he ordered the slaying of two sons-in-law who had defected to Jordan but returned to Baghdad after receiving guarantees of safety.

recently XMM n i was crazy over WWE..... up to e extent where ppl can describe us as crazy nerds lor... we have been goin ard Singapore searchin for WWE VCDs.... askin each n every shop that we hv been.... now in search of the Cyber Sunday VCD.... but it is nowhere 2 b found le.... initiali we saw it @ IMM, but at that point o time.... we din buy becoz we think it may not b interestin.... so we bought only RAW n Survivor Series which is a newer disc in town.... now regretted... also no help oredi.... Serve we rite lo.... available we dun buy... now no more oredi, we go search high n low n everywhere.... stupid sia...

Light Yagami
Light Yagami (Kira) (夜神月, Yagami Raito?) Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano (where possible the voice actors of the anime series have been credited).
The main character of Death Note, Light is a brilliant but bored 17-year old student. When he finds the Death Note dropped in the human world by Ryuk, a Shinigami, he decides to use it to kill all criminals, his ultimate goal being to cleanse the world of evil to create a utopia and to be the God of this new world.

L
L (エル, Eru?) Voiced by: Kappei Yamaguchi
L is the world's top-rated detective, tasked with tracking down and arresting Kira, and Light's nemesis. His dishevelled appearance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. L has many quirks, such as sitting in an odd manner and snacking on sweets in the middle of meetings. He often takes drastic strategies to confuse and force his opponents, and on several occasions he has willingly disclosed several of his weaknesses to Kira at the risk of his own life in the hopes that he would lure him into a trap.
Misa Amane (Kira No. 2) (弥海砂, Amane Misa?) Voiced by: Aya Hirano
A girl with an immense crush on Kira. She is a famous model, and tends to wear Punk Lolita clothing. She is immature and has a tendency to refer to herself in the third person (calling herself "Misa-Misa") in an attempt to be cute. Misa is totally devoted to Light, and she once said that she loved him "at first sight". Light, however, only views her as an asset to his plans because of her Death Note and her "Shinigami Eyes" (that she obtained at the cost of half of her remaining life span). These "Shinigami Eyes" give Misa the ability to know people's names by looking at their faces, thereby giving Kira an edge in his battle against his enemies. Misa read in the newspapers that the murderer of her family was punished by Kira, explaining her total devotion to him, regardless of whether she thinks of his actions as good or evil.
Mello (メロ, Mero?)
Mello was an orphan who grew up with Near in Watari's shelter for gifted children. He was also a primary candidate to become L's successor. Similar to L's fondness for sweets, he is often seen eating bars of chocolate. Contrary to Near, Mello, although quite intelligent, often lets his emotions get the better of him.
Near (ニア, Nia?)
Like Mello, Near was one of the candidates to become L's successor, and calls himself N during the course of his investigations. He too shares a similarity to L: much like L played with things such as sugar cubes and forks, Near is seen playing with toys and his hair throughout the series. He offered to join forces with Mello to fight Kira. When Mello turned down his offer, he gained the support of the US government and formed the Secret Provision for Kira (SPK).

[edit] Shinigami (The Death Gods)
Shinigami, or their formal name Death Gods, are demon-like characters who live in the Shinigami Realm. To increase their life-span, the Shinigami write the names of humans in their Death Notes. However, because of the fact that the Shinigami realm is incredibly dull, this act is usually laughed at, and thus done in privacy. Shinigami cannot be killed by physical methods, such as stabbing or shooting, but must follow a strict set of rules if they want to live.

Ryuk
Ryuk (リューク, Ryūku?) Voiced by: Shidou Nakamura
The original Shinigami who dropped the Death Note in the human world, which Light would pick up. Acting out of pure boredom, Ryuk begins the story of Death Note on a whim. Perhaps neutral by nature, Ryuk often refuses to aid Light and instead enjoys watching him struggle for his goal. The most important facet of Ryuk's character is that he is not Light's friend. He acts for his own interests and entertainment and often fails to tell Light key details about the Death Note. Ryuk is selfish, however, and will aid Light if it serves his own goals, such as providing amusement or obtaining apples.
Rem (レム, Remu?) Voiced by: Kimiko Saitou
The female Shinigami who first gives Misa her Death Note and "eyes." Similar to Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes; however, she purposely gives a Death Note to Misa Amane. Rem inherited her second Death Note from Jealous and thought it only right to pass it on to Misa. Oddly enough, Rem inherits Jealous' love for Misa as well and is prompt to defend Misa even at the cost of her life.
Jealous (ジェラス, Jerasu?) Voiced by: Ken'ichi Matsuyama
Jealous only appears in a flashback during volume 4 when Rem explains a method to kill a Shinigami. In the flashback, Rem recalls Jealous watching over a younger Misa Amane in the human world. Surprised by his concern, Rem eventually looks over his shoulder and witnesses what should have been Misa Amane's last moments on Earth. Apparently infatuated with Misa, Jealous used his Death note to kill Misa's destined murderer. Moments later, Jealous himself turns to a pile of sand and rust as punishment for extending a human life. Rem got her second Death Note from the dead Jealous. Jealous' name is commonly misspelled as "Gelus," which is what Jealous' name was romanized to until Death Note: How to Read 13 revealed the official spelling as Jealous.
Shidoh
Shidoh is a Shinigami that came to the human world to retrieve the Death Note that Ryuk stole from him. After discovering his Death Note was in the hands of Mello, he reveals himself to Mello and informs him of its secrets. Known amongst the Shinigami for his utter stupidity, Shidoh proves himself true to his reputation.
Armonia Jastin Beyondllemason (Jastin the Jewel Skeleton)
Though only appearing for a brief segment in Volume 8, Jastin provides Shidoh with several scrolls describing the various rules that Shinigami have for interacting with humans. He also informs Shidoh that his Death Note was indeed stolen by the Shinigami Ryuk. Shidoh uses the information to guide his interactions with Mello in the human world.

A group of Japanese police officers, led by Soichiro Yagami, tracking down Kira alongside L.
Soichiro Yagami (夜神総一郎, Yagami Sōichirō?) Voiced by: Naoya Uchida
Light's father and leader of the investigation team, dedicated and determined to arrest Kira at any cost. He cares a lot for his family. It was mentioned in the Death Note volume 13 that Soichiro was the only character who truly represented justice.
Tota Matsuda (松田桃太, Matsuda Tōta?) Voiced by: Ryo Naito
The most outspoken member in the investigation team. Although most of the Investigation Team are adamant that what Kira is doing is wrong, Matsuda wavers on the fence, often speaking his mind without thinking - questioning if what Kira is doing is in fact right. He's also the most easily fooled by Light, whom he trusts with absolute certainty. He is also the youngest member.
Kanzo Mogi (模木完造, Mogi Kanzō?) Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai
Mogi is one of the most dedicated members of the investigation team. He remains mostly silent. This silence was marked when he refused to answer Near's questions about the Japanese Investigative Team, even when he was clearly affected by the theories that Near was presenting to him. He collects data quickly and efficiently for the team, and is also shown to be an excellent actor, showing an excitement and cheeriness completely opposite of his usual demeanor.
Shuichi Aizawa (相沢周市, Aizawa Shūichi?) Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara
Aizawa chose to leave the investigation team and remain in the police force, when L offered the investigation team members the choice of quitting and returning to the life of a normal police officer. He continued assisting the investigation team as a member of the Japanese police force after he left.
Watari (Quillsh Wammy) (ワタリ, Watari?) Voiced by: Kiyoshi Kobayashi
L's assistant. He acts as logistics to the investigation team. He founded "The Wammy's House" an orphan shelter for gifted young children such as L, Mello, and Near. Also, as evidenced during the police chase at the end of volume six, he is an experienced sniper.
Hideki Ide & Hirokazu Ukita are the members of the investigation team too. However, Ukita is killed by the second Kira in Volume 4.

Sachiko Yagami (夜神幸子, Yagami Sachiko?) Voiced by: Ai Satou
Light's mother and Soichiro's wife. She plays a minor role in the storyline, unaware of Light's possession of the Death Note.
Sayu Yagami (夜神粧裕, Yagami Sayu?) Voiced by: Haruka Kudo
Light's younger sister. She plays a minor role in the main storyline, unaware of Light's possession of the Death Note. She is captured at one point by Mello, who uses her as leverage to get possession of the Death Note.
Raye Penber (レイ・ペンバー, Rei Penbā?) Voiced by: Hideo Ishikawa
Raye Penber is a member of an FBI team sent to Japan to investigate the Kira killings. Tasked to investigate the life of Light Yagami covertly, his covert actions were detected by Ryuk, who tells Light not because he was on his side, but because it was creeping him out. Light then devises an ingenious plan that forces Penber to unsuspectingly kill the rest of the undercover FBI team right before he dies.
In the movies, his name is changed to Raye Iwamatsu (レイ・イワマツ, Rei Iwamatsu?).
Naomi Misora (南空ナオミ, Misora Naomi?) Voiced by: Naoko Matsui
A former FBI agent. Engaged to Raye Penber. She was the first character to realize that Kira can kill in other ways than a heart attack. Upon the death of her fiancé she sets off on an investigation of her own to discover Kira's identity. Despite her minimal role in the manga and anime, she is a more important character in the first movie, becoming Light's second-greatest antagonist (L being the greatest). However, she was killed by Light in a chance encounter, as he realized that she poses a great threat, having known the circumstances behind the death of Raye Penber.
Kyosuke Higuchi (Yotsuba's Kira, Third Kira) (Higuchi Kyosuke, Kyosuke Higuchi (Yotsuba's Kira, Third Kira)?)
The head of technological development in the Yotsuba group, Higuchi is the third Kira to appear. Higuchi is given the Death Note by Rem after she is told by Light to find a corrupt and power-hungry man. He uses the Death Note to increase his own power.
Teru Mikami (Fourth Kira)
Mikami gains possession of the Death Note from Light. Under the belief that Kira is a god, he continues to kill criminals while Light is being watched to drive off suspicions. Mikami has the same concept of justice as Light.

A Death Note is a book held by a Shinigami which has the power to kill people if certain conditions are met. All Death Notes follow a long set of specific rules, and the writer revealed a few of these rules with each volume of the manga in Japan.

Before releasing his Death Note into the human world, Ryuk wrote some of the rules on the first page in English, because he believed that English is the most widely used language in the world. The rules written by Ryuk are the following:
The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
This note will not take effect unless the writer has the subject's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the subject's name, it will happen.
If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack.
After writing the cause of death, the details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
Each volume of the manga has a page containing new rules or possible uses for the Death Note. In the anime series, each eyecatch contains a different rule written in both English and Japanese, similar to how they were revealed in the Japanese manga. Two new rules are revealed every episode.

In addition to these original rules, Light persuaded Ryuk to add a set of fake rules to mislead L and company.
If the owner of the Death Note does not kill within 13 days of the last entry, he or she will die.

This is a cat i happened 2 meet @ Jurong West Market place... Block 492.... 1st time i saw this cat.... i thot it's my MIMI.... coz they reali looked alike..... kekekek.... but after she stood up.... Nah.... she's so much skinner than MIMI..... n... my Princess MIMI is much prettier n sweeter.... but same lo... very proud de.....

One bright sunny morning….. I woke up early at 6 plus n din go back to sleep oredi…. Coz I m gg out w XMM 2dae again….. kekekeke….

We took a train 2 Chinatown, n ate our fav Nasi Lemak but…. 2dae… somethinj happened n XMM decided nota patronage the stall ever again…. Sob…. But 2 me… okla…. It’s ok 4 me lo….

Then we went to Popular at Majesty building….. n I bought things there…. So happy… I bought 2 books (o nonsense…) coz I cant find my slamdunk comic books, so muz get some substitution lo…. Bought a comic book on burnt bread… dunno watz it’s name la anyway…. N another book on Cats…. As stated on e cover o e book - it said will be loved by all CATS-LOVERS…. I m still thinking…. Reali??? N so I bought it @ $8.75, somemore got discount as I m a Popular member so got 20% discount instead of the usual 10%, mayb due to the xmas seasons ba…

Then we went off to many other parts of Chinatown…. 2dae, we went window-shopping like we hv nv bin 2 Chinatown b4…. Whahahaha…… Crazy lo….

Then after which, we took a train down to Cityhall, where I dropped XMM @ Peninsula Plaza…. N I went up to Roxy 2 collect my CDs… whahahahahahahahaaa…… My long lost Monstrosity CD…. OMGosh…. I missed it so much lei,……
Then I ordered another CD – Stop at Nothing by Dyin Fetus….. kekeke…. Another shiok album lo…. LOL……

Paid $51 4 e 2 CDs…. Hahahah….. 大出血了咯!!!!
Nola… actuali 2dae’s bill is not exp le…. Sometimes even more exp…. But exp nvm…. Scared sometimes.. got $$$ No CD….. like the one Pyrexia latest CD….. I ordered for more than 3 months le… still haven come yet…. Dunno Y Roxy always cant get Pyrexia CD one…. Oredi signed on to UNIQUELEADER le ma….? Y still so hard to get huh??? I guex I muz order directly from UNIQUELEADER le….. anyway… our mailbox now is big enuf le….. can even order DVD…. Whahahaha….

Then…. When I left, I give a call 2 XMM, n she told me she’s waitin 4 me @ e Foodcourt le… HUH??? Foodcourt??? So fast ah??? After she explained then I realized it’s the “lap dap” foodcourrt that she’s referin to…. Not the one @ Funan IT MALL… she sugg 2 go down n take a look…. N 2 our surprise…. It’s not as bad as we expected it to be….. althou not very nicely decorated but… @ liz got air-con n e food there looked quite nice la….. got
Thai food…. Korean Food….. Bak Chor Mee (Minced Meat Noodle)… fish speciality…nasi padang….chicken rice…..n indian food also…. Kekekek….. but 2dae…. As we hv eaten our lunch… we din geta enjoy the delicacies there, so helped ourselves w the coffee n green tea n also chrysanthemum tea there lo…. N XMM bought me some cookies from the Value shop lo… quite nice…. Unexpectedly…..

Then… we went up by the escalator, n XMM brought me to the Value shop… telling me that she spotted a nice-smellin perfume there n cost cheap…. I din buy it eventuali…. Coz I m still in love w my “LOVELY – Sarah Jessica Parker”… know which one??? Kekeke…. Then we went off to the shop next to it, n…. guez wat…. I found the rings that I long to find…… initiali… @ IMM I saw rings @ $8/pc, which I think is still too exp… but I m tempted to buy le lo…. But now guez wat….??? I got it @ a low price of 3 for $10…. Cheap huh??? N some more…. B4 this… I had a hard time lookin for my size…. N here at this particular shop…. I got all the size i needed…. The largest bein Size 22…. So I bought 6 rings in one shot…. Which costed me only $20…. So hapi lo….

After this…. We went back to Jurong Point to shop for my kitties food lo…. Science DIET….. then ocoz I mux go to supermart 2 shop for FOOD lo….. how 2 go on w my life w/o food lei???

I went home…. Ate my dinner, n after my bath…. My XMM handed me the CD…. I opened up e CD frantically n eagerly wanted to listen to e CD lo….. so hapi…. I almoz cried…. Like meetin up w my long lost fren like that….. wata…..XX sia…..

N the 本の猫 that I hv bought n introduced juz now…. It’s reali interesting lo…. Dun believe…? I show u next time…. BUT…. If…! U r not a cat lover…? Nor u own a cat…. U can nv feel like I do lo….
N then I can only hv 2 WORDZ FOR YA….
